Lee Boon Chye
YBhg Dato’ Dr. Lee Boon Chye is a distinguished figure in Malaysia whose career seamlessly bridges the worlds of clinical medicine, national legislation, and corporate leadership. Appointed by the Prime Minister on 11 July 2023 as the Non-Executive Chairman of the Bioeconomy Corporation, Dato’ Dr. Lee currently leads the strategic development of Malaysia’s biotechnology and bio-based industries, leveraging his extensive background in healthcare to drive economic innovation.
His medical journey began at the University of Malaya, where he obtained his MBBS in 1985. Seeking to deepen his expertise, he traveled to the United Kingdom to earn the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) in 1989, followed by specialized cardiology training in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 1990 and 1991. Upon returning to Malaysia, he completed a Master of Medicine at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1992. Today, he remains a respected practitioner as a Resident Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital and is recognized as a Fellow of both the National Heart Association of Malaysia and the ASEAN College of Cardiology.
Dato’ Dr. Lee’s contribution to public service is equally notable. He served three terms as the Member of Parliament for Gopeng (2008–2022) and held the pivotal role of Deputy Minister of Health from 2018 to 2020. During his tenure, he was a key voice in the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Science, and Innovation, helping to shape the nation’s healthcare policies. Beyond government service, he is an active contributor to the healthcare tourism sector through his directorship at the Malaysian Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) and serves as an advisor to the Centre of Regional Strategic Studies.
His diverse research interests—spanning international relations, trade, and biomedicine—continue to inform his work in both the public and private sectors.
